YMCA - Harnessing the power of 40 volunteers

Mendip YMCA has now recruited 40 volunteers since the development of its volunteer strategy and employment of a Volunteer Coordinator in September 2013.

The Coordinator, Glenda Collier, recruits and supports volunteers, to match their skills and aspirations to the needs of the organisation, ensuring that the volunteer benefits from being a part of something they enjoy and find rewarding.

A fantastic host of volunteers have taken up opportunities - within youth clubs, admin, housing, and working one to one or with small groups of young people - to assist them in learning valuable and practical life skills.

Feedback from volunteers has been very positive about their experience of Mendip YMCA – “I like the fact that the YMCA team trusts in volunteers to do interesting work which brings us new skills and knowledge. I have been able to feel valued and useful, and not as if I am just fulfilling my needs for experience, but really helping to contribute to the role I am in.”

Karen Deverell CEO of Mendip YMCA said, “Our whole organisation has been strengthened and greatly enhanced by the fantastic voluntary input from a diverse range of people bringing their own skills and experience. Having Glenda in post has meant volunteers are supported on an ongoing basis to ensure that their experience is personally rewarding, as well as supporting the YMCA. It is truly heartening to see the time and commitment volunteers are willing to give on a regular basis.”

Mendip YMCA’s volunteering strategy not only means that there are more people helping to strengthen projects and initiatives they are involved with, like P2i , but it also allows them make more targeted volunteering opportunities available to people who would like to learn new skills or prepare for work or training.
